Home: Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: I'm going to travel to China. How far is Zhouzhuang from Shanghai? What's the best way to get there? How about hotels over there? Many thanks.
A: Zhouzhuang is located 70 km west of Shanghai. You can travel by bus from Shanghai to Zhouzhuang, which is trip of an hour or so. One place to board is Shanghai changtu Qiche Keyun Zongzhan (Shanghai Long Distance Passenger Bus Central Station). You can also go by train, but that seems to be a little roundabout since you still have to change to a bus to get to you destination.

Zhouzhuang is a small town. Initially founded in the 11th century, the town is known for its beauty featuring numerous lakes and rivers and for its traditional architecture. Since it became a popular tourist destination in recent years, however, the place has become rather crowded and highly commercialized. Some people even claim that it is as crowded as Nanjing Road in Shanghai, which is to say something. There are a few other small towns and villages nearby that are resemble Zhouzhuang in appearance and style, but they could be as crowded – remember we’re talking about a region that is among the most densely in the world.

If you plan to stay overnight in Zhouzhuang, there are quite a few hotels to choose from, which are quite affordable (US$50-60 or less). If you want to get a little closer to local life, you can also stay in one of the small inns runs run by the locals. These establishments cost even less but do not expect the niceties of a starred hotel.
