New U.S. Consulate Opened in Wuhan

The United States opened a new consulate general in the Chinese city Wuhan on November 20. This is the fifth U.S. consular office in China.

Located in central China, at the intersection of the Yangzi River and the Beijing-Guanzhou railway, Wuhan is a major industrial center and plays an important part in China's economic life. The city has population of 7 million.

Housed in the Hankou New World International Trade Plaza, on the 47 floor, the new consulate handles U.S.-related affairs in four central Chinese provinces: Hunai, Hubei, Jiangxi and Henan. The office provides emergency services to U.S. citizens in the region and promotes economic and cultural exchanges. Currently the consulate does not process visa applications.

In addition to the Hankou office and the embassy in Beijing, the United States maintains consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Shengyang. There are also "Virtual Presence Posts" in Chinese cities Qingdao, Tianjin and Zhengzhou.
