From early on Tianjin was a trade port. Western powers created "settlements" in the city where they foreigners and rich Chinese lived and worked. That was before the Communists takeover of China. The British Settlement was in the southern part of old Tianjin. Many western-style villas still stand there, which have become a tourist attraction. The neighborhood is called Wu Da Dao. In Chinese it means "Five Avenues". Shown here is one of those buildings.
