A Reminder of China's Civil War

A Reminder of China's Civil War

Chinese Nationalist slogan inscribed on Jinmen (Kinmen) Island. Jinmen is a county under the control of the Republic of China based in Taiwan. It is, however, much closer to Mainland China than to Taiwan - just two km or so south of Chinese city Xiamen. The slogan reads: "Unify China under the Three-Peoples Doctrine." The Three-Peoples Doctrine is, or was, the political platform of the Chinese Nationalist Party, created by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in the early 20th century and later led by General Chiang Kaishek. In the late 1940s the Nationalists lost a civil war to Chinese Communists and retreated to Taiwan. Today, many Chinese tourists sail up close to Jinmen to take a look at what has become a relic from China's Civil War era. It is a short boat-ride of about 30 minutes and it costs 100 Chinese dollars. That's what you pay to get brainwashed by the other side!
