Buddhism came to China from India. The word "pagoda" was an Portuguese word used to refer to the particular Buddhist tier buildings found in East Asia. In Sanskrit, the language of ancient India, the word "bhagavat" means "blessed." The Chinese word for pagoda is "ta," or "fo ta" "Buddhist tower."
