In 1906, the Chinese government, in cooperation with a number of American and British missionary organizations, founded Peking Union Medical College. In 1915, the newly created Rockefeller Foundation assumed financial responsibility for PUMC and provided funds to turn the school into a first-rate medical training institution for China. Peking Union Medical College Hospital was established as part of this effort, which remains as one of the finest hospitals in China. Peking is the traditional Roamanized name for Beijing.
