St. Joseph's Church was initially built in 1655, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It was burned and detroyed a number of times in the following centuries and was lastly reconstructed in 1904. Some Chinese call it the East Church because it is in the easter section of old Beijing - more specifically, Wangfujing Street, which is now one of the busiest streets in the city.
