Shanghai

Shanghai is China's largest city, with a population of about 14 million. In the course of 170 years, Shanghai has grown from what was a small muddy town at the mouth of the Yangzi River to be a city of the greatest importance to China, economically as well as culturally.

Attractions

  • Huaihai Road

    The most trendy shopping street in Shanghai, featuring hundreds of stores and restaurants. Also favorable place for young people to hang out. Used to be part of the French Settlement in Shanghai, as shown by some of the architecture dating back to years before 1949.
  • Lujiazui

    Refers to a triangle area on the western side of the Huangpu River, facing the Bund. This is the new business business district of Shanghai, part of the booming Pudong area.
  • Nanjing Road

    The prime shopping street in Shanghai. Its eastern end is on the Bund, so it is easy to take a stroll on the street from there.
  • Pearl of the Orient

    The tower, standing at At 468 meters (1,535 feet) in height, is the tallest in China. In the tower there ae sightseeing platforms and a revolving restaurant.
  • People's Square

    A large public park located in central Shanghai. Converted from a horse racing course that dates back to years before 1949, the People's Square is an open space favored by many local residents and also the site of Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, and Shanghai Municipal Government.
  • Pudong

    This refers to the newly opened district of Shanghai lying east of the Huangpu River, which includes the city's new business center Lujiazui. In addition to the Oriental Pearl Tower, World Financial Center and Jinmao Building in Lujiazui, other sights in Pudong include the Century Park and the Science and Technology Museum.
  • Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall

    A multi-media museum that displays the past, present and future of Shanghai. A nice place to gather an overview of China's largest city.
  • St. Ignatius Cathedral

    Known as Xujiahui Jiaotang, St. Ignatius Cathedral, a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral, was built by French Jesuits at the beginning of the 20th century. Located in Xujiahui District, next to the office of the Shanghai Catholic Diocese, the structure is a functioning church today.
  • The Bund

    This is a stretch of the river bank on the eastern side of the Huangpu, which flows through central Shanghai. The Bund was the old business district of Shanghai and continues to be part of the dynamic city life of Shanghai.
  • Xintiandi

    In Chinese "Xintiandi" means "New Heaven and Earth." This refers to a two-square-mile block development in Shanghai that has become the city's leading entertainment center, which features chic restaurants, bars and boutiques. Ironically, not far from this care-free nightlife spot is the building where, back in 1921, Mao Zedong and his comrades created the Chinese Communist Party.
  • Yu Garden

    A little distance south of the Bund is where Old Shanghai used to stand. Yu Garden is a part of the old town that has been preserved to the present. Featuring traditional Chinese architecture, the garden was originally in the middle of the 16th century, by a retired Chinese official.

Airports:

Shanghai Pudong International Airport is 40 km east of the city center. Transportation: shuttle buses, long-distance buses, taxis, maglev train.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is 15 km west of the city center. Transportation: shuttle buses, public buses, taxis.
