Qingdao

Located on the tip of Shandong Peninsula, Qingdao is a popular resort city, known for its beautiful beach, seasonal weather, and nice urban architecture. People in the west may have heard of it without recognizing it - it's where Tsingtao beer comes from. The city started as a German colony at the end of the 19th century, hence the beer and the international atmosphere of the city.

Attractions

  • Beer City (Pijiu Cheng)

A logical creation for a city known for Tsingdao Beer. The complex is located a short distance east of Qingdao, at the scenic area known as Shilaoren. It is often the site of various festivals, shows and other public events.
  • Eight Great Gates (Ba Da Guan)

Don't be misled by the name - you won't find things like city gates. Ba Da Guan - "Eight Great Gates" - merely refers to a district where several streets bear names with the term "Guan" in it. Still, it is a nice place to visit, which features a large number of Western villas built in the early 20the century, which bear witness to the colonial past of Qingdao.
  • Lao Shan (Mt. Lao)

The mountain is 40 km east of Qingdao, known for its peaks, rocks, pine trees and beautiful views of the sea. It also has a strong Daoist tradition, which makes sense given the Daoist emphasis on man's affinity with nature.
  • Lu Xun Park (Lu Xun Gongyuan)

The park is named after a prominent Chinese essayist of the 20th century, although the public space does not have a particular Lu Xun-related theme. This one of the oldest park in Qingdao, which comprises the waterfront land lying between Qindao and the No. 1 Beach.
  • No. 1 Beach (Di Yi Yuchang)

When you go to Qingdao, you go to the sea. There are different sections of the beach you can go to, and No. 1 Beach is a popular spot where crowds gather.
  • Qindao (Not Qingdao!)

Qin refers to a type of Chinese musical instrument. The term is used here to refer to the shape of the slender peninsula that juts off the southern beach of Qingdao (Qing means "blue"). Think of Qindao, think of waves, seagulls, and sea breeze.
  • Qingdao Aquarium (Qingdao Shuizuguan)

Built in the 1930s, the Qingdao Aquarium is one of the oldest and largest in China. It is consisted of five exhibition halls, displaying thousands of sea creatures from around the world.
  • Qingdao Naval Museum (Haijun Bowuguan)

This is a new addition to the list of attractions in Qingdao, opened in 1991. Located between Qindao and Lu Xun Park, the museum has 40,000 square meters of exhibition area, presenting weapons and other artifacts related to naval history.
  • The Pier (Zhanqiao)

People in Qingdao call it Qianhai Zhanqiao - "the front sea pier." Built in the 1890s, the pier extends out on the sea from the main avenue of the city. Over the years the pier has become the symbol of Qingdao. It is nice to take a walk on the pier, looking out on the sea and looking back onto the city.
