Fuzhou

Fuzhou is the provincial capital of Fujian. Located on the southern coast of China, Fuzhou is about half way between Shanghai in the north and Guangzhou in the south. The Min river flows through the city, which among China's major cities is also the closet to Taibei which sits directly across the Taiwan Strait. Fuzhou has nickname of "Rong Cheng" (Banyan City), which derives from the fact that a large number of banyan trees grow in the city.

Attractions

  • Gushan (Drum Mountain)

    Gushan is located in the southeastern suburb of Fuzhou. With an elevation of 880 meters, the mountain makes a good spot to view the delta where the Min river empties into the sea. Halfway up the mountain there is also Yongquansi (Surging Spring Temple). Originally established in the 8th century, the existing temple was built in the 17th century.
  • Kaiyuan Temple (Kaiyuansi)

    Kaiyuan Temple was originally established in the 6ht century. The temple houses some previous Buddhist sutra printed in the Song Dynasty. An iron statue of Amit?bha Buddha now housed in the temple was cast over 900 hundred years ago, with an estimated weight of 10,000 pounds. The temple is located in the north part of Fuzhou.
  • Three Lanes and Seven Alleys (San Fang Qi Xiang)

    This is part of old-town Fuzhou that has survived to the present time. Located in the modern-day Fuzhou, the traditional residential area comprises a cluster of a dozen or so streets, hence the name San Fang Qi Xiang. Unlike most other historical structures in China, which tend to be palaces or temples, the buildings San Fang Qi Xiang are mostly houses for average folks and small shops, from which one can gather how in the old days common people lived.
  • West Lake (Xihu)

    Xihu - West Lake - is located in the northwestern part of Fuzhou. With a total area of 110 acres, the park makes a nice traditional style garden, featuring towers, pavilions and bridges, some which date back to the 18th century. In the park one also finds the recently opened Fujian Museum, which is the largest of its kind in Fujian Province and shelters over 200,000 natural and cultural artifacts.
  • Yushan (Yu Hill)

    Yushan stands in the heart of Fuzhou, where one can take an overall view of the city. On the hill there sit several historical sites, including Dingguangsi--White Pagoda Temple, named after a pagoda that is part of the temple; Qigongsi, Marquis Qi Shrine, established to honor the national hero Qi Jiguang from the 16th century; and Guanyinge, Tower for the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

Fuzhou Transportation


Airport:

Fuzhou Changle International Airport is 40 km southeast of the city center. The airport is connected to the city by shuttle buses and taxis. Passengers are going to fly domestic can also check in at the city terminal located at 138 Wuyi Zhong Lu (May 1st Middle Road) in central Fuzhou.

Railway Station:

Fuzhou Railway Station is located in the northern part of the city, on Jinyuan Road.

Taxi:

¥8 for the first 3 km; ¥1.5 for every additional km. ¥1.0 per ride extra as fuel tax.

Fuzhou Passenger Transportation Station (Fuzhou Keyun Zhan), also known as Southern Station (Nan Zhan), No. 190 Wuyi Zhong Lu (May 1st Middle Road). Fuzhou Passenger Transportation Station North (Fuzhou Keyun Bei Zhan), No. 371 Hualin Lu (Hualin Road). Fuzhou Qiche Xi Zhan (Fuzhou Bus Station West), Hong Shan Chengguan Cun (Chengguan Village, Hong Shan).

Ports

Mawei Port (Mawei Gang), No. 1 Jingwu Road. Taijiang Port (Taijiang Gang), Jiangbin Road and Wuyi Nan Lu (May 1st Southern Road). Passenger services to Hong Kong, Xiamen and Shanghai.
