Jieyang city to Guangzhou city, time, costs, ways
Q: I will begin teaching in Jieyang City soon. My girlgriend lives in Guangzhou city. Can you tell me the various ways, including airplane, train or bus and the costs, to find the quickest way to travel back and forth and the time it takes.
We assume you're referring to Jieyang city in Guangdong Province.
You can travel by coach to go from Jieyang to Guangzhou. Bus fare is about 150 yuan and travel time is approximately 5 1/2 hours. You should be able to find Guangzhou-bound buses at Jieyang Qiche Zong Zhan (Jieyang Bus Station General) or Jieyang Qishan Qiche Zhan (Jieyang Qishan Bus Station. The latter is located close to Jieyang Railway Station whereas the former is farther south in the city. In Guangzhou you can find You should be able to find the long distance buses at long distance bus stations such as Guangzhou Tianhe Keyuan Zhan (Guangzhou Tianhe Passenger Transportation Station) or Guangdong Sheng Qiche Keyun Zhan (Guangdong Provincial Bus Passenger Transportation Station). Make sure you go by the buses that go directly to Jieyang without making local stops. Some buses are nicer than others - cleaner, air-conditioned, etc.; check them out.
There are two daily trains that travel from Jieyang to Guangzhou, which depart about 10:00 AM. from Jieyang to Guangzhou. One stops at Guangzhou Railway Station and the other Guangzhou East Railway Station. Travel times are 6 and 7 1/2 hours. Return trains depart from Guangzhou East Railway Station and Guangzhou Railway Station at about 8:30 AM and 2:00 PM. A seat costs about 100 yuan. A hard-sleeper ticket costs about 200 yuan. A soft-sleeper ticket, about 300 yuan. One of the trains originate in Guangzhou whereas the other come from some other place and stops in Guangzhou. This may affect how easy it is to purchase the train tickets. Generally, it is easier to get hold coach tickets than train tickets, although there is no certainty about this. Prices for train and bus are for one-way trips. Return travel costs the same.
If you want to fly, you can go by the flights from Guangzhou Baiyun airport to Shantou Waisha Airport. There are quite a few daily flights operated by China Southern Airlines, the earliest departures from Guangzhou is about 8:00 AM and the latest 10:00 or so. Departures from Shantou are about same hours. Flight time is about one hour. Airfares vary, depending on how and when you book your tickets. You can probably get a one way ticket for about 400-600 dollars. You need to, of course, travel from the airport to Jieyang. You probably need to go first from the airport to Shantou city and then take a coach there to go to Jieyang. It is a trip of about one hour. You can also hire a taxi at the airport to go Jieyang, but that is going to cost you.
You can book your flights a few weeks in advance. For train tickets, about 14-10 days in advance. For buses, you can probably show up and go if it is not holiday seasons, although you may not want to bet on it.

Jieyang is a relatively small city, so do not expect to see many foreigners over there. In the neighboring cities Shantou or Chaozhou you can probably find expatriates, like in the hundreds. The best way for you to find out about expatriates' life in the region to get in touch of one or two foreigners who have been in the area for some time. Maybe try places such as Shantou University? Also, there are quite a few foreign language teachers in Jieyang, Shantou and Chaozhou. You can probably find out about them through program placement people. In Shantou there is also a Foreign Affairs Service Center (Shantou Waishi Fuwu Zhongxin); maybe you can get some relevant info from the people there too. The center is located at Caizheng Building, Suite 1105, Street Section 11, Changping Road, Shantou; tel.: 0754 8179878. Don't know if there is a similar center in Jieyang. Here is the website of Guangdong Foreign Affairs Service Center.
The central urban core of Jieyang has a population of roughly 600,000. This most refers to the Rongcheng district of Jieyang. The administrative unit that is Jieyang City comprises of both urban and rural areas, measured a total of 5,240 square kilometers (2,022 square miles), with a population of 10 million. The city is consisted of one district (Rongcheng), three counties (Jiedong, Jiexi, Huilai), and one sub-city (Puning). Rongcheng is where the government of Jieyang City is located; most likely that is also where you'll be.
For some more general information about Jieyang, you can try the English version of the Jieyang government's website.
